Mulching Trees

Posted on 10th February 2012 in Lawn Care, Shrubs

Mulching around trees/shrubs has many benefits.  It helps keep the mower and trimmer away from the bark, especially important in younger trees.  If the bark is damaged, the trees water uptake is also damaged this harming the tree and potentially killing it eventually.  Mulching will also help keep in moisture around the plant.  When grass is grown right up to the plant, it is competing for water with that plant thus with mulch you help to reduce this competition.

salt used on ice

Magnesium chloride is said to one of the more safe products.   It is suppose to have the least effect on concrete or grass.  Regular rock salt is the worst for concrete and grass.   I think that the most important thing is to use it sparingly,  you dont need to put so much down that it gets tracked through you house, garage, or into the office.  Yes some will but you can use less than what you see at most locations and still have great results while helping to keep the environment cleaner.

shrub and tree trimming

Posted on 10th February 2012 in Shrubs

With the lack of snow cover on the ground and the warmer than normal temps we have been having makes it an ideal time to trim shrubs and trees.  I would not recommend trimming evergreen plants at this time of year.  If some of your shrubs are extremely overgrown like spirea, potentilla, burning bush, lilac they all can be cut way back.  It may effect the coming years bloom on some plants but it can help to rejuvinate them as well.
